Writer’s Block
Contrary to what this section has been named, I have never really experienced Writer’s Block, which, for the uninitiated, is simply the inability to produce words on paper or the desertion of one’s literary creativity. Indeed, ever since I can remember, I have loved writing, and in my loneliest moments, writing has come to my rescue as a comfort and solace. I write a little bit everysingle day of my life, even if sometimes it amounts to no more than a few words in my daily journal which sits on my bedside table.
Over the years, I have turned my hand to every form of written expression. When still an undergraduate at Elphinstone College, Bombay, my very first feature article was published in Eve’s Weekly, a women’s magazine published in Bombay. Freelance Journalism provided me with a valuable second income for more than a decade while I taught English in Jai Hind College in Bombay. Upon arriving in the USA, I had a bunch of feature stories published in a variety of periodicals and for a few years was the New York correspondent for a monthly magazine published out of the Middle East called The Indian-American. From cover stories to freewheeling opinion-based pieces that appeared in my regular monthly columns, I have run the gamut.
A career in university teaching inevitably means academic writing and publication. The adage “Publish Or Perish” does hold true in American academia. Falling in line with scholarly requirements, I turned to research-based writing and during the next decade of my life, while in the United States, I published two books and several academic articles in scholarly journals.
It is only very recently that I have had the luxury of devoting time and creative energy to the writing of short stories. Joining The Two Bridges Creative Writers Group in New York, a few years ago, fuelled my creativity and led to the production of a dozen short stories, of which a few have been accepted for publication. I am currently working on a manuscript that examines the reasons for my Anglophilia and its gradual development over a lifetime. Hopefully, it will become my next book.
